Employers Attending Positions and Majors How to Prepare

Directions to the Fair

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

  • Your future employer wants you to do an internship.  60% of employers prefer to hire job applicants who have internship experience.
  • Two or more internships will improve your odds of landing a job.  UW graduates who completed 2 or more internships were less likely to still be looking for work 6 months after graduation.
  • Recruiters hire students who attend fairs.  92% of the employers who attended our 2015 Internship Fair and completed our survey indicated they extended offers to candidates they met at the fair.
  • Employers aren’t just looking for programmers and accountants. 50 of the employers who attended last year’s Internship Fair were open to ALL MAJORS!

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE FAIR

  • Prepare your resume and have it reviewed.  Look at sample resumes in the Career Guide and consider attending a resume workshop or lab.  Once you have your resume drafted, stop by for a Same-Day Session to get some feedback on it or attend ResumeFest on February 17th.
  • Submit your resume to the 2016 Internship Fair Resume Book! Select employers have purchased access to this book, in the hopes of identifying talented UW interns. Whether or not you're attending the fair, don't miss this opportunity to stand out! Click here for more details.
  • Research the employers. Spend a few minutes researching the employers who are attending. The list below is updated regularly and will be posted as a downloadable guide a week before the fair (click “Positions and Majors Employers are Recruiting” button above). Research those employers you’re interested in meeting with by visiting their web sites and doing a quick review of them online.
  • Practice your approach. What do you want the employer to know about you? Which of your skills and past experiences do you want to highlight? Have a short 15-second “sales pitch” ready and make sure to build in some good questions of your own to ask the employer.
  • Be sure to attend our Internship Fair Success workshop the week of the fair to learn how to prepare, what to bring, what to say, and how to follow-up.

WHAT YOU SHOULD WEAR

Your style of dress may vary according to the type of field you’re considering and the employers you plan to meet with. However, you’ll find that most employers will be wearing business-casual attire, which is a safe bet for you as well. For example, consider wearing pressed slacks or a skirt with a blouse, sweater, or collared shirt. Please note that lockers or storage facilities are not available; to increase the ease with which you can move through the fair, we recommend trying to minimize what you bring with you.

A special thank you to our 2016 Internship Career Fair sponsors!
