Positivity

In my last post, I proclaimed being a tree-hugger.

This post is all ‘bout me being a loyal and lasting PRINCE fan … & loving his old song POSITIVITY

Positivity is a deep-track song off the Lovesexy album [‘88] and made an early impression on me, back-in-the-day.  The song stuck with me, to this very day.  I thank him for that, and appreciate other sources of positivity that helped me become the eternal optimist I am today.  Influences such as my parents & sisters, folk music of the 70s and 80s, J.R.R. Tolkien’s writing & imagination, teachers and friends.   I simply love Prince classics such as … Sign of the Times, Around The World In a Day, Lovesexy, Purple Rain, 1999, Gold, Parade, Crystal Ball, just to name a few.  These albums are oozing with positivity, themes of spirituality, funk, all that jazz.  I’m excited to buy Prince’s ’09 3-disk set, though I’m bummed this set is offered exclusively through a large retailer, and not through the local indie music stores [Easy Street!  Sonic Boom!  Silver Platters!] I so enjoy supporting.

Ok, enough about Prince.   I encourage ya’ll to embrace optimism in your lives, careers, transitions, job searches.  Read on...

Lots of scary stuff happening these days.  Many people struggling with life, work, health, finding  & keeping jobs.  On the flip side, lots of good, encouraging things happening as well.  Focus on the positive.  Focus on your strengths.  Focus on what is in your control.  Try not to get caught up in the negativity online or on cable TV.  Speaking of TV … in my biased opinion … most people need to watch far LESS TV, read more and exercise more.  I’m amazed at how much more time I have and how better I feel, simply by exercising more & not watching much TV at all.  LOST, now that's a show I can't quit & do enjoying watching online for free.

My heart goes out to the unemployed, underemployed, people losing jobs.  Life will get better, believe in that.

If you are not a ‘glass is half full’ kind of person, can you become one?  Yes, I believe you can.  Surround yourself with friends, family who are unconditional supporters.  Hang out with people who believe in opportunities and possibilities.  Seek out support via our friends @ the UW Counseling Center and in many community based support centers.

Many neat examples of the power-of-positive-thinking embedded in our myStory campaign.  Lots of great jobs found in our HuskyJobs system, found at our Spring Career Fair.

If you are indeed in a job search or just don’t know what your next move is gonna be … the best use of your time is … drum roll please … NETWORKING.  Get the word out to friends, family, anyone that you are looking for work.  Contact professional associations to learn about industries and fields and expand your network.  Go on informational interviews, send thank you notes and always ask for referrals to new/more contacts when networking.  Consider creating and using a LinkedIn profile and use this tool to expand your network.   Spend LESS time on Facebook debating reality tv.

Consider watching some of these clips – learn how other people faced tough times, made decisions, took risks, moved forward in their lives, changed paths.

Take care & peace out!
