A Tale of Two Cities

Quick! Without thinking about your answer, choose your preference from the options below:

Rain or humidity?
Earthquakes or hurricanes?
Apples or oranges?
Pacific or Atlantic?
Working or unemployed?

Despite your preferences on weather, natural disasters, fruit, and oceans, most of us can probably agree on our answer to #5. And for all of you rain-sloshing, earthquake-surviving, apple-chomping, Pacific-enduring Huskies, I’ve got good news: you’re in the right place. Read on for the national job outlook that's got Washington at the top of the list...

According to an article published by Forbes.com, Washington is where the jobs are for 2009. In Yakima, last year’s strong apple harvest boosted employment significantly, and the city now boasts the strongest employment outlook in the US, projecting 21% growth. In second place is Kennewick, WA, where scientists are on the cutting edge of research in plastics and biofuels. Kennewick is predicting 19% growth in 2009. Washington is the only state to appear twice on the list of the top cities for hiring.

The east coast is not doing so well, particularly Florida. Of the ten cities with the worst employment outlook for ’09, five were located in the sunshine state (Cape Coral, Port St. Lucie, Miami, Marco Island, and Tallahassee.)

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Florida. The Kraken rollercoaster at SeaWorld will always hold a special place in my heart. But job-seekers may be wise to stay away from the sunshine state. Maybe, say, 3000 miles to the northwest.

I've decided to make up my own:

Sun! Only rain at night.
Hurricanes! You can't surf an earthquake.
Mangos! Apples & oranges are boring.
Carribean! Forget the Pacific & Atlantic.

Working... but location neutral!!! Students today should think out of the box (as demonstrated above). Gone are the days that you HAVE TO work in an office. I say, choose an educational path and profession that allows you to wear your swimwear clothing to work!!!

one thing came up on my mind.. Working or unemployed.. but still the future is in our hands..

rain,apple,pacific,working. I couldn't choose between earthquakes & hurricane

rain, earthquakes, oranges, pacific, and working.

Apple or Orange : apple have much nutrition that orange, while apple more delicious that orange.

The above thought is smart and doesn’t require any further addition.
It’s perfect thought from my side.

Rain * Little Earthquakes * Apples! * Pacific * Working!

great post Cara - cheers!

Florida is really being hit. You have to specialize in something to get a job. If you don't have a specialty then you will face huge competition for jobs.[promotional link removed -- admin]

rain hurricanes apples pacific working

OK so i have no idea if there is any significance to the answers but there you go. : - ) Also, like asked, that was without thinking - can I change rain to humidity please (afterthought!!!)

Matthew Anderson

Hi Matthew,
Sorry if that was unclear! I was trying to make the first column Pacific Northwest-oriented, and the second column more specific to the Southeast, specifically Florida.

And of course you can change your answer to humidity, but if you have long hair you might regret it. Helloooo, rat's nest! :)

Thanks so much for your reply!
Cara

I think one shouldn't worry about national trends in order to live in a certain geographic area. You only need one job so you should look at other things instead of worrying about everything.

After graduating I moved to Japan for a year. My girlfriend and I moved back, and were now living in Tucson and faced with a really tough economy. I'm doing freelance web design down here and business is hard to come by. Still, it's good to hear there's some positive news.

sunny with earthquakes(not too often though!) red delicious apples in the pacific(southwest sorry!) and unemployed like I almost am right now! lol...I have never been to Florida so I guess I dont know what I am missing out on? if anything? [Promotional link removed. - Admin]
